Red Hat Embellishment

Notes
A cute little embellishment for personalising hand-made cards or scrapbook pages.
Please note that the pattern is written using UK terms.
Ch 3 at beginning of each round counts as the first treble.

1 UK treble = 1 US double crochet

Finished Size
Approximately 2” (5 cm) in diameter.

Yarn

  • 16 yds (14 m) Schachenmayr nomotta Cherie [100% mercerized cotton]; or
  • Any yarn you fancy!

Hook
3.0 mm (US D hook), or whatever needed to obtain desired size.

Gauge/Tension
Gauge is unimportant, but obviously will affect the size of the finished piece.

Abbreviations
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
Tr: treble
Trdec: treble decrease (*yarn over hook, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over hook, draw through 2 loops; repeat from *, yarn over hook, draw through remaining 3 loops.)

Hat
Ch4 and join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
R1: Ch 3, work 11 tr into ring, join with sl st to third ch. (12 tr)
R2: Ch 3, work 1 tr into the same space, then 2 tr into each of the next 11 tr, join with sl st to third ch. (24 tr)
R3: Ch 3, working through back loops only 1 trdec over the next 2 tr, *1 tr in next tr, 1 trdec over next 2 tr; repeat from * to end of round, join with sl st to third ch. (16 tr)
R4: Ch 3, 1 tr in the same place, working through the front loops only 2 tr in each of the next 15 tr, join with sl st to third ch. (32 tr)
R5: Ch 3, skip 1 tr, *5 tr in next tr, skip 1 tr; repeat from * to end of round, join with sl st to third ch. (48 tr)

Fasten off, and weave in ends. Thread purple ribbon between the posts of the stitches on round 3, and tie in a bow.
